Members First will put our Union back in the hands of members
Members First will put our Union back in the hands of memberS
Our union is at a turning point. This year the United Workers Union (UWU) will have an election. It will be one of the biggest union elections in our movement’s history, giving members a say on who leads their union.
Members First is a national collective of members, delegates, organisers and leaders who will run as a team in the 2026 UWU election. We want to give members and delegates the power to decide what UWU fights for and how we win.
Bosses are getting richer. Workers are burning out. The cost of living is soaring. Wages are going nowhere. Too many workers don’t even know what a union can be. A union has to show up.
Voting for Members First will mean we can rebuild UWU as a more democratic, stronger union that:
– shows up in workplaces
– backs members to organise and take action
– is accountable to members for every decision.
Members First will make face to face organising the central focus of our union. Members deserve to see an organiser on their site and be represented by organisers in-person during meetings.
Members First will equip delegates with everything they need to build a strong union presence at their workplace. We will bring back UWU-run delegate training, industry and statewide delegate conferences, and build pathways for delegates to become organisers.
Members first will revitalise organising in our regional centres across Australia. Regional members need more, not less support.
Members First will set up our union to ensure members can take strike action to fight for real change. We will create and invest $1 million seed capital in a UWU strike fund to support members taking action.
Members First will implement strong political strategy driven by members. No backroom deals without members knowledge.
Members First will improve financial transparency and accountability to ensure we are spending members money responsibly.
Members First will build an open and democratic Union, led by our members for our members.
Members First will build a stronger more diverse union based on respect, understanding and solidarity.
WHAT SHOULD WE TACKLE FIRST?

All eligible members will receive a ballot paper in their letterboxes from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). You will need to fill out your ballot paper for Members First, and return your ballot by reply paid post back to the AEC.
Everyone who is a financial industrial member of UWU as of 30 January 2026 will receive a ballot paper to vote in the UWU elections this year.
Unfortunately, any ballots posted now will not meet the AEC deadline for counting (even if sent via Express Post).
The best way you can support Members First is to vote for us and encourage other union members to vote for us in the upcoming election. You can also support Members First by making a donation to our campaign or signing up to volunteer your time.
